Program Council Adopts Items
This week, KPFT’s Program Council met and passed a variety of important items. The PC’s co-chair posted the following on them to our Local Station Board. Great work by this PC; it’s been a pleasure to work with these folks this year.
I am pleased to report that, in a meeting of the Program Council, three major goals were adopted that will hopefully lead to a better KPFT. The three are:
- Contracts for programmers: Each of our (approximately) 75 locally produced programs will receive a contract from the station. Contracts are for a one year period and carry with them responsibilities which, if carried out, will improve the sound of the station. Ernesto will begin to distribute contracts for signature immediately and they will go into effect on 1/1/08.
- Evaluation of Programs: As part of our agreement with programmers, each program will be reviewed. The review will consist of four parts: a) By the listeners, b) By the Program Council, c) By the Program Director and, d) By the programmer (self evaluation). Based on the outcome of the evaluation, shows may be asked to improve in certain areas. If improvements are not made, shows might be terminated and replaced.
- Appeals Process: If a show is terminated either for performance criteria as determined by the evaluation or for violation of station policy concerning things like drug and alcohol, non-attendance, use of profanity, etc., the programmer will have 30 days to file a written approval with the Program Council. The Program Council will then forward its recommendation concerning the disposition of the decision to terminate back to management. This will give the programmer an opportunity to state his/her case to someone other then management.
In addition to these items, the Program Council is working on a process to evaluate and place new programs. We expect adoption of this process in our January meeting. We will also begin evaluating programs at the rate of approximately six per month in January. Agendas and adopted minutes of our meetings in 2007 are available on the KPFT web site.
I want to thank each member of the PC, Ernesto and Duane for the collaborative effort which made all of this possible. In accomplishing what we did, we have laid a foundation which will hopefully provide a path of continuous improvement for our station.
Best Regards,
Sandy Weinmann
