Opportunity to Participate in Radio and New Media Technology Training WorkshopRadio Reporting Using Digital Technology Training Workshop

25 July – 1 August, 2006, Media Centre Panos South Asia (PSA), Kathmandu, Nepal

Radio continues to be the most effective medium of communication and information dissemination in the developing world. Despite the rapid expansion and reach of new media technologies, millions of people living off the information highway or unable to read the printed word, still depend on the radio for news, information and entertainment. But while it might seem as if radio is a technology for the poor, it does not mean, of course, that progress has left radio behind. Indeed, radio technology has come a long way: production, editing and transmission techniques have undergone major transformation since the early analogue days; broadcast quality has improved; and the Internet allows listeners to tune into local stations thousands of miles away. In fact, with satellite broadcasts of digital radio programmes, radio is getting a new lease of life in the developed world.

As part of Panos South Asia’s goals to help build the capacity of mainstream media in South Asia to be at par with the advancement in radio technology globally, a regional training workshop entitled ’Radio Reporting Using Digital Technology Training Workshop’ is being organized in Kathmandu, Nepal from 25 July – 1 August, 2006. The workshop, organized under PSA’s Building Communications Opportunities Programme will be conducted at the Panos South Asia Media Centre that has the state of the art facilities for the purpose. It is designed for South Asian journalists, not necessarily already working in radio, who will produce and file content for local, regional and international stations in addition to contributing southern views to the North. The course will incorporate training on radio writing, reporting, production skills, digital editing, and audio file compression and transfer techniques. Radio professionals from the PSA’s global network will conduct the workshop with practical hands-on sessions.

Broadcasters, producers, editors and reporters, especially from radio media from South Asian countries wishing to attend this training workshop may apply by 30 June, 2006 by e-mail at <mailto:kishor@panossouthasia.org>kishor@panossouthasia.org. PSA will cover all related costs of participation, including travel for selected participants from the region. Your application should contain a brief resume and a less than 300 word essay stating your experience on radio and how by participating in this workshop it will enable you or your organization to enhance your work. PSA will respond ONLY to selected applicants by 11 July, 2006. Telephone enquiries and other solicitation shall not be entertained.
