Goodbye Matt Sonzala

Matt Sonzala, host of KPFT’s legendary hip-hop show Damage Control (profiled in many national media outlets), will do his final program tonight. Matt posts on his blog, HoustonSoReal, about his departure. He notes of Damage Control:

The whole reason for Damage Control was to give everyone a chance. If you’re making rap music independently and have no in’s to commercial radio or any of that shit, you could always come down to DC and get a spin. Let the world know you are out here. I love that concept, it’s the best, it’s in my heart…

But he adds dissatisfaction about the state of hip-hop, and the musical and artistic quality. He makes many valid points.

Please wish Matt well as he and the family move to Austin for a new job with South by Southwest. And please tune in tonight at midnight for Matt’s last Damage Control, which will be carried on by DJ Chill. Thank you, Matt, for the years you’ve given to KPFT, from Damage Control to so much more. Your commitment to independent music, local artists, the vision of community KPFT embodies, and your passion will be missed on KPFT. We’re proud of you and wish you nothing but the best.

UPDATE: ProHipHop on Matt’s move to SXSW.
