About

Urban Unrest (formerly Rolas de Aztlan) is a weblog on media, race, culture and society, hosted by Ernesto Aguilar, currently program director at the Pacifica Foundation’s Houston radio station, KPFT, 90.1 FM.

More specifically, Urban Unrest is written to educate on media matters; provide online training tools for those interested in media; to cover media justice news; to distribute growth opportunities and news related to KPFT; to disseminate analysis on social/cultural issues of relevance; and to discuss the future of independent media.

Ernesto Aguilar became KPFT’s program director on March 15, 2005. In addition to his KPFT PD duties, Ernesto founded KPFT’s Summer Youth and New Voices Programs. As a University of Houston graduate with a bachelor’s in journalism, he also served as co-director of KPFT’s news department. Ernesto started at KPFT as a volunteer and hosted the Latino-issues show Sexto Sol: Radio from Occupied Aztlan as well as co-founded the Latino programmers’ collaborative Somos KPFT. Ernesto has been involved in a diverse range of activism, from student anti-war organizing and anti-apartheid activism to founding the Anarchist People of Color email list to drawing mass media attention to police brutality as a founder of local chapter of Copwatch. In 2006, Ernesto was named by BravoHouston as one of the city’s top Latino cultural leaders.Feel free to get in touch via the following contact form.

The blog’s old name: “Rolas de Aztlan” was/is Spanish/Spanglish slang. It’s inspired by the recording Rolas de Aztlan: Songs of the Chicano Movement. The new name reflects KPFT’s metropolitan world and Pacifica’s chronicling of dialogue for time immemorial.
